Dental Fillings

When it comes to preventative treatment, dental fillings are one of the most common and effective methods we can use to protect the teeth. Over time and with wear, small holes (known as cavities) can form in the teeth. These holes can become problematic over time if they are not treated, leading to infections inside the roots of the teeth or damage to the tooth.

How Fillings Work

Our dental offices use composite resin for filling cavities. After we’ve made you comfortable and used a local anesthetic to numb pain and sensation in the area where we’ll be working, our dentists will gently drill around the area of the cavity to remove any decaying or damaged material. Next, we will place the filling material on the area, sculpt it to match the shape of the natural tooth as closely as possible, and harden the material. After a filling, treat the area gently and avoid eating solid foods until the anesthetic has worn off.

How Do I Know If I Have a Cavity?

Some people are more susceptible to cavities because of their mouth’s structure, the composition of the saliva, diet, dental hygiene habits, and many other factors. However, cavities can develop at any age, even if you haven’t had them before. Cavities are difficult to see with the naked eye, and it’s best to discover them during a routine dental exam so they can be resolved before they worsen. However, cavities that are more serious may begin to cause discomfort in the mouth, especially during eating. If you’ve been experiencing tooth pain or sensitivity and haven’t had an oral examination in some time, be sure to book your appointment so we can repair any cavities and prevent future issues.
